First photograph of the Earth taken from the Moon, during the NASA's Lunar Orbiter Mission, the 23d August 1966. Vintage gelatin-silver print.

This Earth survey observed from the lunar orbit at an altitude of 730 miles above the hidden face of the Moon is one of the most famous photographs of the Lunar Orbiter mission.

The Lunar Orbiter programme was created by NASA in 1966 with a total of five missions to carry out the first mapping of the lunar soil. The data collected will enable NASA's scientists to determine the landing sites for the Apollo missions. It ended in 1967. NASA published then the first Atlas of the Moon written by Bowker and Hughe in 1971. It contains the complete compilation of the first views of the incredible Moon landscapes observed since the lunar orbit.

Lunar Orbiter probes were a concentrate of exceptional technologies. With an extremely sophisticated camera system on board, they were able to capture high-definition images. This system was combined with a real photographic laboratory on board which developed the exposed films. The datas were sent by radio to Earth, received by an intercontinental network of ground antennae. The analog datas were recorded on magnetic tapes and photographic films. The film strips were manually assembled after being revealed, giving the Lunar Orbiter photographs the appearance of juxtaposed strips that immediately make them recognizable.

This rare photograph belongs to the very closed circle of the best known and most appreciated photographs of space. Its conservation status is «premium».
