Comet Hale-Bopp observation from the earth orbit of the Columbia space shuttle, April 1997. Nasa's vintage chromogenic print on Kodak paper.

While the astronauts of the space shuttle Columbia are watching the sunset from space, they can observe for the first time a comet flying over the Earth’s globe and in perfect conditions. The comet Hale-Bopp was probably the most observed comet of the 20th century from Earth and the brightest ever seen by Man in several decades. It was discovered only in 1995 and became visible to the naked eye in 1996. It reached its perihelion (closest point to the sun on the 1st April 1997).
