Photograph of the observation of of the planet Neptune complete disc during the Nasa's Voyager 2 Mission, in 1989. Vintage chromogenic print on Kodak paper.

In 1972, NASA, after the success of the Apollo missions that enabled Man to walk on the Moon on July 20, 1969, began the «Voyager» program. The goal is to approach and explore the outer planets of the solar system: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. The Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 probes will be sent in 1976. The Voyager program met a great public popularity by revealing the first extraordinary color images of the most important planets in our solar system. These historical photographs now belong to the History of Photography, of which they have written some of the most extraordinary pages.

Neptune is photographed by Voyager 2 before leaving to interstellar space. Here, the planet is observed through three filters: blue, green and a filter that allows light normally absorbed by methane gas to pass through. Thus, the red or white parts in the picture are reflecting sun light. Neptune is one of the last two planets in the solar system and is surrounded by the greatest mysteries. It received the visit of only one probe: Voyager 2. The planet Neptune is called the giant ice. Its atmosphere contains large amounts of volatile matter such as water or ammonia. This gives Neptune its unique bluish hue.

This rare photograph belongs to the very closed circle of the best known and most appreciated photographs of space. It has on its back a scientific legend on a sheet. Its state of conservation is «premium».
