A Rolex Secret

January the 23rd 1960. After 8 hours 35 minutes underwater, the submarine Trieste breaks the surface. Attached to the exterior of its hull is a watch, its heart still beating. Yet, it had just overcome the forces of vast depths. At 10,916 metres down, the deepest point in the planet’s oceans, the pressure is over one ton per square centimetre. No human being can survive there.

However, two days later, Jaques Piccard signs a telegram addressed to the manufacturer Rolex, simply saying: “I am happy to announce that your watch functions just as well at 11,000m down as at the surface”. That which gave life to the Submariner in ’53 and to the Sea-Dweller in ’67, the Deep Sea Special just made history and made everyone want to join in, by wearing one on their own wrist: that's what a Rolex is.
