Bulgari watches
It was probably in the forties that Rome-based jewellers Giorgio and Costantino Bulgari realised that a wristwatch could also be a piece of jewellery and so created the first Bulgari watches to add to their huge jewellery collection.
The Bulgaris had been making jewellery for over half a century, at the time. Their grandfather, the goldsmith, Sotiro Bulgari, emigrated from Greece to Italy in 1879 following conflict with the Ottoman Empire. He opened his first shop in Rome in 1884 and moved to Via Condotti in 1905, a fashionable street which is still home to the company’s head offices. Bulgari’s watches really became famous from 1977, the year of the launch of the Bulgari Bulgari, a very sober wristwatch with the characteristic and totally unique double engraved company name on the wide bezel. All Bulgari watches have been made by the company’s Swiss subsidiary, Bulgari Time SA, since the early eighties.
In 1999, the Italian luxury goods multinational added two more watch brands to its portfolio, Gérald Genta and Daniel Roth.
