Photograph of the astronaut Bruce Mc Candless making the first loose flight in space, from the Challenger space shuttle, during the NASA's Mission STS-41B, the 7th February 1984. Vintage chromogenic print on Kodak paper.

Thanks to the revolutionary Man Maneuvering Unit (MMU), NASA achieved a historic feat by sending for the first time a man into space from the Challenger space shuttle.

The MMU can reach a speed of 25 meters per second and is equipped with 24 micro-reactors housed in different places of its structure. The astronaut uses two control levers located at the end of the armrests of the MMU to manoeuvre the aircraft, which has a battery life of approximately 6 hours thanks to its two nitrogen tanks. The MMU was used for satellite maintenance but was abandoned by NASA after the accident of the space shuttle Challenger because it was considered too dangerous and replaced by the articulated arm of the space shuttle "CANADARM". It remains to this day, the only mode of autonomous transport developed by human to move freely in space.

This rare photograph belongs to the very closed circle of the best known and most appreciated photographs of space. Its conservation status is «premium».
