Vintage gelatin-silver print of the NASA's Lunar Orbiter Mission showing an observation of the lunar soil: "LUNAR ORBITER V-129H", of 1967.

The Lunar Orbiter program was launched by NASA in 1966. It has a total of 5 missions to carry out the first mapping of the lunar soil. The data collected will enable NASA scientists to determine the landing sites for the Apollo missions. It ends in 1967.

NASA will publish in 1971 the 1st Atlas of the Moon written by Bowker and Hughe, it contains the complete compilation of the first views of the incredible landscapes of the Moon observed from the lunar orbit.

Lunar Orbiter probes were a concentrate of exceptional technologies. With an extremely sophisticated camera system, they were able to capture high-definition images. This system was associated with a real photographic laboratory on board on the orbit which developed the exposed films, scans were sent by radio to Earth, where they were received by an intercontinental network of ground antennae.

The datas were recorded on magnetic tapes and photographic films. The film strips were manually assembled after being revealed which gives the photographs of Lunar Orbiter this appearance of juxtaposed bands which makes them immediately recognizable.
