The Royal Oak was named after a British predator. The model was baptised this way because its bezel is like cannon's mouth. The Royal Oak from Audemars Piguet was born in 1972 and presented for the first time at the Bâle's salon. According to the legend, it would have been designed in a night by the designer Gérald Genta. If it nowadays a true icon of the watchmaking world, the Royal Oak was not sucessfull immediately due to its size. The Royal Oak and its 39 mm seemed massive compared to other fashionable wristwatch at the time. It took a few years before this wristwatch was adopted by collectors and jet-setteurs from all around the world. "Often imitated, never duplicated", is what Audemars Piguet said about the beautiful Royal Oak.
