Introduced in 1969, the Daytona 6263 is a must-have for every sports watch collector. In the mid 1950s, Tiffany became one of the few retailers allowed to print its logo on Rolex dials.  The present example of the 6263 is a rare treasure to come by. Not only known for its acrylic bezel and screw down pushers, the present example features a "Big Red" configuration on the dial, which can be identified for the enlarged red Daytona text on 6 o'clock. Furthermore stamped with the "Tiffany & Co" logo underneath the Cosmograph text, the present watch is exceptionally sought after. Opportunities to acquire such a double stamped Daytona is infrequent, making it a prized addition for any collection. As the final evolution of the manually-wound Daytona line, the reference 6263 is widely regarded as the quintessential and most iconic model in the Cosmograph collection. It showcases all the features that made the Daytona a design masterpiece: a bezel with a black insert featuring a tachymeter scale, screw-down pushers, and the unmistakable Rolex Oyster case. The present example, dating from 1973, is a rare variant featuring an elegant and attractive "Sigma" dial. The "T Swiss T" signature at 6 o'clock is flanked by the Greek Sigma symbol, indicating that the markers and hands are made of white gold. Research shows that the "Sigma" notation appeared on Rolex dials in the early 1970s, following guidelines issued by the Association for the Industrial Promotion of Gold (APRIOR). The bezel type differentiated the two from one another, with reference 6263, like the present lot, featuring an acrylic bezel and reference 6265, fitted with a metal bezel. The 6263 and 6265 models are further distinguished from their preceding references by the introduction of larger, screw-down chronograph pushers and winding crown and the addition of 'Oyster' signed to the dial. The introduction of these attributes marked the standard for all future references and are still utilized on Daytona models to this day. The present watch can be differentiated from other references 6263, because it has a movement number engraved under the balance wheel. At the time, only the gold versions of the Daytona has a movement number, but due to the lack of success of the watch, Rolex started equipping these calibre on steel models as well. This small difference makes this watch even more collectable.
