It was in 1896, four years after Louis Vuitton's death, that his son George first drew the famous monogrammed motif. This new monogram was originally applied on a jacquard woven canvas. A coating that was complicated to produce and handle when covering trunks, it offered a particularly neat and elegant pattern. It was finally removed from the catalogue in 1904, for a stencil-coated canvas that was simpler to produce. This very fragile canvas, used for only eight years, is today extremely difficult to find in good condition and probably the most emblematic of the Louis Vuitton brand.
