Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Watches
The Royal Oak was named after a famous British warship. The model got its name because its bezel looks like the mouth of a cannon.
The Royal Oak by Audemars Piguet was launched in 1972 and presented for the first time at the Basel trade show. According to legend, it was designed in one night by Gérald Genta.
Although it is now a true icon of watch making, the Royal Oak was not an immediate success because of its size. The 39 mm diameter of the Royal Oak made it seem huge when compared to the smaller watches that were fashionable at the time. It took a few years before it was taken up by collectors and jet-setters throughout the world.
"Often imitated, never equalled”, is how Audemars Piguet describes the handsome Royal Oak.
