The history of Cartier Tank Française

Watches Cartier Tank Française

In 1919, the Parisian designer, Louis Cartier took inspiration from the Renault tanks used during the First World War and produced one of the landmark designs of this mythical brand: the famous Tank watch.

Cartier signed exclusive contracts with the most prestigious watch makers to create watches that have become iconic, some of which are still in production. This is the case with the famous Tank watch which was sold in 1919 in honour of the Allies’ tanks.

It has undergone many variations since its launch and has appeared in several collections: the Tank Française, the Tank Américaine, the Tank Louis Cartier, the Tank Chinoise and the Tank Divan.

The more recent Tank Française first appeared in 1996.
