In den 1930er Jahren verlässt Victor Vasarely Ungarn, um sich als Grafikkünstler in Paris niederzulassen. Er arbeitet für Werbeagenturen, für die er aus dem Spiel mit Formen, Volumen und Farben eine eigenständige Technik entwickelt, die heute den Namen "optische Kunst" trägt. Ihm verdanken wir vor allem das berühmte Logo der Marke Renault.

1944 beginnt er seine Malerlaufbahn in der brandneuen Galerie seiner Freundin Denise René. Hier erfindet er die Komposition seiner abstrakten geometrischen Gemälde, die mit einem Minimum an Formen und Farben auskommen.

20 Jahre später bezeichnet das amerikanische Magazin Time diese Art von Kunstwerk als Op Art (optische Kunst). Victor Vasarely ist somit ihr Erfinder.
