A very rare and horologically important, signed and dated early 17th century lantern clock
Beschreibung :
William Bowyer, London, 1617;The frame;The brass posted frame with four bulbous ringed urn finials over tapering Doric columns set on ringed ball feet, each pillar base set proud of the top and bottom plate by 1/16th of a inch to give an 'inverted breakfront' cross-section. Side doors and backplate now missing, frets, top finial, and bell strap are modern fittings. The current bell was found with the clock, it appears to be 17th century but is probably not original.;The frame measuring 14.3cms (5 and 5/8ths of an inch) square.;Height to the top of the pillared finial 25.8cms (10 and 1/8th of an inch).;The dial;The chapter ring 6 inches in diameter and 3/4s of an inch in width with Roman numerals interspersed by floating simple eight-pointed stars framing the single line inner border, the centre engraved with twelve shaded lobes of gadrooning, each separated by a scrolled arrow head on a shaded ground, the original iron hand with double C-scroll terminal and fettled counterpoise, to a 2.25 inch brass alarm setting dial with Roman numerals interspersed by simple six-pointed star half-hour markers around a flower-head engraved centre with 24 alternating wide and narrow petals, the dial plate shaped to fit the profile of the pillars and decorated with engraved foliage to the top and scrolling strapwork to the base, signed in an upward-curving reserve 'William Bowyer fecit 1617' immediately below VII and V.;The movement;Weight driven with two trains set one in front of the other, each train of three brass wheels on steel arbors, the going now terminating in an anchor escapement, the strike terminating in an altered heavy brass fly, the strike dictated by the iron countwheel set to the rear of the crossbar, both crossbars identical except the right hand side of the rear which is shaped in order to accommodate the lifting of the locking detent. The steel hammer with repaired base and stop, but retaining the original shaped hammer spring.

Signed and dated 1856, for Patent No. 15344, issued January 6, 1857 The model consists of a pair of circular plates joined by three slender rods in which is planted a central spiral screw passing through a tapered cylindrical weight that that can be raised to wind the clock. The weight carries a pair of tapered rectangular steel pallets the engage the screw as the weight descends turning the main wheel of the clockwork and thus the lever escapement. A pair of steel rods parallel to the spiral and fixed to the weight turn with it. At their upper end, a geared cross piece engages the motion work driving the hands. Joseph Ledgard, Newcastle The eight inch square brass dial with wheatear engraved border framing the silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with elaborate half-hour marks and half-quarter marks, the matted centre with decorated chamfered date aperture, ringed winding squares and a chamfered mock pendulum aperture, the twin fusee movement united by five substantial knopped and finned pillars, now with an anchor escapement, rack striking on a bell, the backplate boldly signed in a shaped cartouche in the centre of a series of foliate scrolls within a cross-hatched wheat ear border. Now contained in a custom-made olivewood veneered case made in the early 18th century style with shallow caddy top, central handle and four finials over long glazed side panels on a moulded base and squat feet 43cms (17ins) high.

Thomas Knifton, at the Cross Keys in Lothbury The strapped bell with replaced central finial over four substantial tapering turned finials between three pierced and lightly engraved frets, the foremost signed with Knifton's 'cross keys' pictogram, over tapered Doric columns on ball feet, the Roman chapter ring 7/8ths of an inch in width and 6 inches in diameter, with floating star half hour numerals with fleur-de-lis half hour markers and no quarter hour track, the dial centre engraved with foliage and a mask at VI, the Roman alarm disc with an engraved rose and cut steel hand, the twin train weight driven movement with countwheel strike, converted to anchor escapement, (alarm train removed but retaining original iron backplate), the hammer springs with faceted edges 35cms (14ins) high.
