Manufacturer: Meylan;Year: Circa 1940;Movement No: 238;Case No: 132'459;Model Name: Type A-7;Material: Chrome plated;Calibre: Manual, cal. 17""7, 17 jewels;Bracelet/Strap: Leather;Clasp/Buckle: Stainless steel;Dimensions: 51mm. Diameter;Signed: Case and movement signed;Catalogue Essay;In 1934 the US Army Air Corps predecessor of the US Army Air Forces (1941-1947), and later on renamed US Air Force (1947 – present days) issued a request for a timepiece describing in detail the design and functions under “Specification No. 27748.”;Amongst these specifications the watch was to have an offset dial, large crown and chronograph pusher easy to operate whilst wearing a glove, large Arabic numerals, 30 minutes counter and continuous sub seconds dial.;Only three watch companies produced these Type A-7 watches: Meylan, Longines and Gallet. It is believed that the original procurement of 1934 was followed up in the late 1930s-early 40s. The Type A-7 was declared obsolete in 1943.;The Type A-7 “Avigation” was designed for aircraft navigation, “Aerial Navigation”, from which derives the conjunction “Avigation”.;For the collector of military timepieces the present Meylan Type A-7 is a true grail. Considering their “tool watch” status most of these watches were worn in adrenaline filled action situations, the present lot is in superb condition, the movement looks as it has just left the Meylan workshops. The full military marking on the caseback and “U.S. Army” engraved on the movement make this ultra-rare military watch even more desirable for the collector of military timepieces.

The associated purpose built later base has been restored. it bears abrasions to the surface, and there are signs of damage around the bottom left and right extremities of the oval. The music, as indicated, is not original to the piece, but is of the period. The later glass dome is associated. One ormolu mount is replaced. Despite the restoration of the piece, it has been sympathetically restored. The bird is re-feathered. The tin figures are original, but repainted. The kite and accompanying kite string are recreations, the flowers and foliage restored. In working order.

The enamelling to the right lid covering the watch has been extensively re-enamelled in hard enamel. The enamel to the left side is far better and appears to be original, that said it should be again noted that it is our opinion that the gold applique to both wings is most likely covering damage beneath it. The enamel to the base looks generally good with minor scuffing and some minor chips around the winding hole. The side panels have some areas of enamel loss, restoration, scratches or chips..The music work is complete but not functioning and the timepiece is fully wound, both will require complete revision. The watch is lacking the hour hand.

The top lids in good order and the enamel painting finely executed, in vivid tones. There are small enamel losses to the white stringing framing the side panels. There are some enamel losses to the side panels on the right, furthermore there are two small areas of enamel restoration. The base enamel generally with surface scratches, and some small chipping arond the music winding hole. The music work required a male key, both hands appear to have been shortened..the music is complete although not functioning and will require revision, the watch is also not working but complete.

The movement will run but will require service. However, it is complete. The music is working. There is some pitting to the levers on the music bridges. The cuvette has surface wear and the enamel is generally good with only very minor losses to the stringing. The enamel panel is in lovely condition and shows only the slightest scuffing. It was obviously executed by the highest quality enameler, such as Lissognol, as suggested in the note.
