In 1834, he opened a drawing school in St. Louis and.made maps of the Indian reservations for the superintendent of.Indian affairs. Later he served in the U.S. surveyor-general of.public land office before being appointed as assistant engineer.under Lieutenant Robert E. Lee. Kayser surveyed the Mississippi.River and reported on the harbor improvement project to Lee. He.acted as a government surveyor until 1839, when he was selected to.serve as the first city engineer for the city of St. Louis. He held.this position off and on until 1857. In 1871 and 1873, he was.elected city comptroller. Henry Kayser died October 16, 1884, in.Hoboken, New Jersey.

Hannah Jones, ye Widow of Henry Jones The caddy top surmounted by a gilt brass twin-S scroll handle over a moulded cornice, the sides with circular and shaped glazed apertures to a moulded base now raised on block feet, the 6.75 inch square brass dial with winged cherubs head spandrels enclosing the silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with half quarter marks around the finely matted centre with decorated chamfered date aperture and ringed winding square, the single gut fusee movement with substantial plates united by five knopped and finned pillars, the verge escapement with bob pendulum and elaborate pierced apron, repeating the hours and the quarters on three hammers and bells on pulling the repeat cord set to the left hand side, the backplate signed in a flowing copperplate hand 'Hannah Jones ye Widdow of Henry Jones, London' (sic) amid a symmetrical pattern of flowerheads and foliage within a wheatear border 40cms (1ft 2ins) high.

Henry Jones in ye Temple Surmounted by a (later) faceted gilt brass handle on a raised moulded section with pierced soundfret over a low caddy and moulded cornice, the sides with rectangular glazed panels to a moulded plinth base, inlaid to all four sides with running foliage, the 7 and 3/8ths of an inch square brass chapter ring with flowerhead and foliage spandrels surrounding the silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with every two and a half minutes marked either with an Arabic numeral, meeting-arrowhead half-quarter marks or heavy dots, the centre very finely matted and set with a chamfered date aperture, the twin gut fusee movement united by six knopped and finned pillars latched to the frontplate, the verge escapement striking the hours via a numbered countwheel set on the backplate within a wide wheatear border with flowing copperplate signature running just above the outside clicks 38cms (15ins) high.
