Smith & Sons, Clerkenwell Surmounted by the slightly curved cupola roof, complete with weather vane, over shaped finials, quatrefoils and other architectural details, the whole united by five heavy shouldered pillars screwed front and back, on a stepped oak base, the particularly elaborate pierced chapter ring with gothic Roman numerals engraved on interlinked shield shaped cartouches, with fancy pierced steel hands, the twin chain fusee movement with deadbeat escapement with passing strike on a bell on the half hour and a full strike on a coiled circular-section gong on the hour, the wheels of five crossings throughout, the pendulum with a central brass rod flanked by two steel rods to a double-brass faced lenticular bob centred by a steel flowerhead collet, all protected by a glazed dome the frame 49cms (19ins) high.

Smith & Sons Ltd., Trafalgar Square, London, Makers to the Admiralty & to the Indian Government, No. 312-21, manufactured in 1913.Nicole Nielsen three quarter plate fully jewelled gilt-finished chain fusée movement, three arm tourbillon carriage with gold poising screws, lateral counterpoised lever escapement, Guillaume compensation balance with gold and platinum screws, blued steel balance spring, free sprung regulator, glazed dust cover, the off-white Willis dial with Roman numerals, blued steel spade hands, two subsidiary dials indicating up and down indicator and constant seconds, in heavy circular case, keyless winding engaged by depressing a button in the band, case stamped F.T London for Fred Thoms and with London date letter for 1913, movement signed and numbered.54 mm. diam..Provenance.Admiral C.A. Fountaine CB (1879 - 1946).It is thought that the present watch was formerly the property of the late Admiral C.A. Fountaine who used it for his researches on the apparent aberration of the Greenwich Shortt Clock..The Shortt Free Pendulum Clock was invented by William Harrison Shortt and is considered the most accurate pendulum clock ever manufactured. It was produced by the Synchronome Company and patented in September 1921. Shortt Clocks became the principal timekeepers world wide and were used in many observatories, including the Greenwich Observatory from 1925 to 1945 and the United States Naval Observatory from 1930 to 1946..Admiral Fountaine purchased Shortt Clock number 6 for his private observatory in 1924. The Admiral meticulously compared its rate to his astronomical observations which were so precise that they indicated small variations in the earth's rotation.
