After a short career in the family business, Garvin struck out on his own to Los Angeles, where he was involved in media and entertainment and ultimately motor sports. He owned and managed teams in the Can Am, Formula Atlantic and Formula Ford series in the United States. He also had interests in the Formula One and World Cart Series (Indy). His premier driver, Danny Sullivan was subsequently a Champion of the Indianapolis 500 race. He was much beloved in the world of motor sports, where he formed close friendships with many of the sports leading personalities, including Paul Newman, who introduced him to the world of chronographs..In later life, Garvin's passions took him from Los Angeles to New York, Milan, Monte Carlo, and ultimately to Miami and the Mediterranean.
